The Treatment of Anxiety and Panic Disorders
In 1971, Dr. Koenig began his work with anxiety as a graduate student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts . While there, he studied the effects of anxiety on athletic performance . Since that time he continued to treat general anxiety problems, panic and performance anxiety. His expertise on anxiety is comprehensive and on the cutting edge of treatment innovation.
Dr. Koenig's approach to the treatment of anxiety begins with an extensive evaluation of your symptoms, your personal history and current life situation. Next, you are provided with a comprehensive explanation about the cause of anxiety. You will come to understand that anxiety involves a very human response to threat and the symptoms of your anxiety to be the body's effort to manage the perceived threat.
A number of therapeutic strategies will be implemented to help you manage your anxiety. You may learn relaxation and breathing techniques to effectively reduce anxiety. You will also work to increase your understanding of how your thoughts and beliefs can cause anxiety, and how changing your thinking can decrease it. Dr. Koenig works to have individuals leave their sessions with practical tools to deal with anxiety and ultimately have a variety of tools in their "anxiety toolbox" to use as the need arises.
Although anxiety can be treated without medications, this is not always true. Every effort is made to help you manage your anxiety without medications. If needed, Dr. Koenig will work with your primary physician or a qualified medical professional to determine if medications are right for you.
