Dr. Robert Koenig
Clinical Psychologist
Education and Experience
I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts in 1979. After ten years of work in a community-based treatment center, I transitioned to full-time private practice.
Specializations
My primary method of psychological treatment emphasizes problem-solving and helping patients change unhelpful patterns of thinking. I specialize in the treatment of:
- Anxiety Disorders
- Adult Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD)
- Alcohol Abuse
I have advanced training in psychopharmacology and am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Additionally, I am listed on the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.
Approach to Treating Anxiety Disorders
My interest in the treatment of anxiety began as a graduate student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts in 1971, where I researched the effects of anxiety on athletic performance. Since then, I have continued to treat generalized anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and performance anxiety. I believe my expertise in anxiety is comprehensive and at the cutting edge of treatment innovation.
Treatment Process
- Evaluation: The treatment process begins with an extensive evaluation of your symptoms, personal history, and current life situation.
- Understanding Anxiety: We will discuss the causes of anxiety to help you understand that it involves a very human response to perceived threats. I strive to help you recognize that your symptoms of anxiety are your body’s effort to manage these threats.
- Therapeutic Strategies: A number of therapeutic strategies will be implemented to help you manage your anxiety, including:
- Relaxation and Breathing Techniques: To effectively reduce anxiety.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): To understand how your thoughts and beliefs can cause anxiety and how changing your thinking can decrease anxiety.
My goal is to ensure you leave each session with practical tools to manage your anxiety and to develop a variety of strategies in your “anxiety toolbox” to use as needed.
Medication Referral
While anxiety can be treated without medications, they can be a valuable part of reducing your suffering. If you agree that medications might be helpful, I will work with your primary physician or a qualified medical professional to determine if they are right for you.
